What happens if the catalytic appliance is operated improperly?

Plugging can occur in the combustor if the stove is operated improperly. (closing the bypass to soon)
Doing this will also not allow the combustor to achieve light-off .
Another example is burning materials that produce large flakes or char, such as wrapping paper or cardboard, can plug enough cells to cause smoke spillage.
